When I think back to my own time in high school, I could easily name several women who were there for me. They didn’t have all the answers or know all the things about God or the Bible, but they consistently showed up. They were there, and I could trust them. I knew I could do that for someone else’s daughter. I could be like the women who showed up for me. And as a mom, I hope and pray for the adults who are going to show up for my own kids one day.
Since I started volunteering at InsideOut, I’ve learned that high school students are so FUN. My coleader and I say all the time that the most we laugh all week is on Sundays with our small group. Spending time with them is an absolute joy. Getting to walk alongside a group of high schoolers during this season of their life is an incredible experience that I truly believe is a blessing. We’ve journeyed through all kinds of highs and lows together, and the relationships that we have built with one another is something I do not take for granted.
While leading, I have learned a lot about how to listen. So often they don’t need advice—they really just need to know they are heard, that their voice matters. I also believe that leading helps keep me accountable in my own faith journey. And it helps me have fun! Often I get so caught up in “adult life” that I forget to have fun too.
You are Made For More, too. Volunteering in our church is one way you can discover the more you are made for. Ready to find out what you were made for?
