What originally inspired me to begin serving in student ministry is the example set by my parents who both served in my youth group through middle school and high school. When my oldest daughter started in Transit, I desired to continue that generational legacy of service and walk with my daughters through that season of life. I was then inspired to move into service with IO based on the connection I made with my Transit students, and I wanted to continue to foster those relationships and mentorship through high school.
Based on my experience, serving students and fostering spiritual growth in the next generation is one incredible way to have a positive impact for the kingdom. Not only are you helping get individual students connected in a relationship with their heavenly Father, you’re igniting a fire in those students that can lead to their own service in other areas of family ministry (Waumba, UpStreet, or Transit) where they have influence with younger students and multiply that impact. It also amazing to have the opportunity, as an adult leader, to stand in the gap for those students who don't have a strong father or male leader in their life and are looking for that confirmation as a son.
I've been amazed at the different instances where I've witnessed moments of strong faith from high school students. It has also been amazing to see how serving in their environment has grown my connection with my own daughters.
